It would be fantastic to have a Helsinki-based version of this class:  http://la.thepublicschool.org/class/1984

(I have not copied the proposal as it would be quite different, including the title, obviously!)

I envision this as a class that meets maybe once per month, each time with a different 'teacher' meeting in a different space across the city.  The teacher of that particular week can organise tours around the physical spaces we discuss, and the class (like the Los Angeles one) would focus on spectres -- things that have disappeared, places that have been changed and altered through the inevitable stages of "progress".

Any appropriate readings could be passed around and discussed, likely in Finnish (I only propose this in English because I don't speak Finnish, but please, run this class in your own language!  It's about Helsinki, after all!)

Hi all! I am still sick since last weekend, so I will miss out tonight! But I am still in for all explorations in Helsinki, and I am writing here some suggestions:

A friend of mine has made an interesting urban research documentary film at Columbia University. I would like to screen it either as a part of another class or as an event of its own. We can do this at my working space in Katajanokka anytime!

*Cities of Preferences* is a short documentary film which
addresses the spatial organization of communities within the modern city,
and presents the neighborhood segregation model developed by Thomas
Schelling, a 2005 Nobel Laureate in Economics. In addition, the film
illustrates some of the culturally rich enclaves found across the boroughs
of New York City to reflect upon the positive and negative aspects of
segregation and congregation and how designers might engage with this
phenomenon.

*Cities of Preferences (20 min)*
Produced by: Moving Image Lab at Columbia [MILC]  <

A film by: Mathan Ratinam (Columbia GSAPP / Parsons), Toni Schade
(University of Innsbruck), Andrea Zalewski (Columbia GSAPP)

Saviuunin rakennus työpaja/ Cob oven building workshop
ehdottanutSalla

Good news for all bread, pizza, and oven enthusiasts!

more..

This workshop is now scheduled as the Cob oven building workshop for tomorrow night and the coming weekend! Check out the calendar! And a warm welcome!! :)

If you have ever tasted pizza or bread made in a stoneoven, nothing else will ever satisfy your taste-buds likewise. Wouldn't it be great to build a stone oven yourself, together with other enthusiasts, and learn basic brick-layering techniques and bread-making? At the Kalasatama area, with a public access to people who want to organize events or just celebrate with friends?

This workshop would be part of a project called "5", a series of food events in Helsinki. Check out the blog! 1234viisi.wordpress.com After the oven would be dry (that takes about 3-4 weeks), the first event of the series could take place (end of July/middle of August?), followed by hopefully many others that anyone interested could organize.

Hi! This class sounds fantastic - let's organize it! I am e-mailing you, Salla and Katharina, to agree on a date.

Ps. Kalasatamassa on myös pieni auringonottohiekkaranta!

We are starting a regular open Saturday at the Kalasatama containers with all other container groups. This Saturday July 3rd we will have a free flea market (exchanging things like clothes, books...) together with a picnic. Welcome with your old things and picnic food! ps. There is also a small artificial beach for sunbathing in Kalasatama...

- Adding pink speech bubble tabs (available in Saiturinpörssi) in adds with some text on them, for example "Pay for nothing - buy an image." (in Finnish)or "You are what you read." (in Ilta-Sanomat add).

- On metro stations magazine tabloids can be swapped on many locations quite freely.
I have replaced them for example with cartoons (from Gado and Bizarro) and illustrated info on how the advertisers are trying to fool us. This would be nice medium also for counter-advertising. Copying A3 posters with colours in libraries costs 40 cents each.
- Removing in-your-face sticker adds from busses´ seats.

- Some add banners are mounted on bridges that go above heavy traffic roads. Cutting cable ties and removing the entire banner could be done easily. Haven´t done that yet but I once mounted a banner of my own.

- Trying to find a cheap street stand for some poster to confuse people.

more..

I like the idea of a fake/confusing poster stand somewhere on a street, or Narinkkatori. The poster would have to be very confusing to catch people's eye, as ads can be quite confusing nowadays as well...

-

Everyone brings a bunch of old, weird, broken or for any reason discarded clothes. The ones who have a sewing machine, bring one, and everyone else brings all kinds of sewing equipment and related stuff: needles, thread, tape, scissors... but also other tools or decoration that could be used in cloth experiments.

The old clothes are presented to everyone and redistributed. Everyone picks up a couple of items and redesigns them into a new outfit! Experimental techniques are tried out, fun and new ideas for combining clothes are the main thing.

This class will happen right after Midsummer! This Sunday, that I was thinking for the class, is already booked as there will be painting session for the containers at 3pm. Everyone, come and participate! I will let you know soon which day the sewing will be moved to.

I cycle everywhere (when the streets aren't covered in ice) but when it comes time to adjust my brake pads, fine-tine my mechs or straighten my wheels, I'm totally and hopelessly lost.

This would be a basic class to demonstrate these techniques and other basic care such as cleaning, etc.  Presumably this would be done using the minimum of tools, so people can keep their bikes running smoothly without having to shell out lots of €€€ on specialised equipment.

Dear all,
