The Wire, a television series that ran on HBO from 2002 through 2008, is critically regarded as the most accomplished television programme in the history of the medium. Over 60 episodes, David Simon and Ed Burns laid out a stunning portrayal of the American empire in decline, covering a variety of topics that transcend typical television portrayals.

A friend of mine has made an interesting urban research documentary film at Columbia University. I would like to screen it either as a part of another class or as an event of its own. We can do this at my working space in Katajanokka anytime!

*Cities of Preferences* is a short documentary film which
addresses the spatial organization of communities within the modern city,
and presents the neighborhood segregation model developed by Thomas
Schelling, a 2005 Nobel Laureate in Economics. In addition, the film
illustrates some of the culturally rich enclaves found across the boroughs
of New York City to reflect upon the positive and negative aspects of
segregation and congregation and how designers might engage with this
phenomenon.

Advertising pervades every aspect of our lives.  This class will look at how advertising, the language of the global corporate system, has reached into society.  We will look at the history of marketing, and specifically how it developed in the 20th century alongside psychological theories of the time.  We will discuss topics such as: Is advertising a form of creativity?  How can one resist or fight against ads (looking at detournement, billboard modifications, etc.)?  What are the 'weak spots' in a marketing campaign and how can they be exploited?  What happens when tropes of commercial advertising are used to promote non-profit or artistic ventures?  What about viral marketing?  Subliminal advertising?  Product placement?

Classes wil be in a seminar/discussion format, perhaps with screenings.

As this was originally proposed in the Los Angeles Public School ...

"In this class, we will view and discuss cinema from around the world, mainly focusing on the discursive essay-film. We aim to catalyze a space in which to explore under-known histories that have been archived in film, with special attention paid to postwar liberation movements, such as the Tricontinentalist and Non-alignment projects (as seen in such films as Hour of the Furances and Videograms of a Revolution). How can these films help us perform an archeology of visions of futurity? What potentialities are still available to us in these visions, and what does our relationship to them reveal? What sorts of political imaginaries can film build? What is the state of the political avant-garde in film?

Naamioiden persoonallisuuden työstämisen kautta oma teatraalinen ilmaisu kehittyy. Kattavamman kuvauksen voi lukea esimerkiksi Keith Johnstone: Impro  (viimeinen luku). Kurssin lopuksi voitaisiin järjestää näytelmä, ehkä täysin improvisoitu.

Working with masks. Creating powerfull characters using masks and working with the created characters. Through working on the mask's personality participant will increase his/hers own abilities in theatral expression. More thorough description available in the last chapter of: Keith Johnstone - Impro. In the end of the course a small play could be performed, maybe even wholly improvised.
